Thråstur V. Söring, manager of the Seamen's Day Council and DAS apartments, says that the roughly estimated population development in Iceland calls for the need to add 200 new nursing spaces for the elderly every year if demand is to be met.
In the new development plan of the Seamen's Council, Hrafnista and DAS apartments for the plots at Hraunvang, Laugarás and Skógarbær, you can see the development and expansion that is needed until the year 2040.
„We held workshops and talked to all senior citizens“ associations in the capital area, met all the councils of elders at the local authorities, met with the National Association of Senior Citizens and of course discussed carefully with our staff, residents of Hrafnist homes and DAS apartments and a pervasive theme in what people suggested was creating clusters that make up a community where people can come together".“
Work on the plan began in 2023, and the consultation process revealed that it would be most reasonable to build a so-called quality of life core, as has been done at Sléttuveg, where you can find a core consisting of a nursing home, a service center and 150 apartments that are rented out to older people who live there independently.
