Hrafnista is one of three nursing homes that participates in an exciting pilot project called Málbrú. The project is intended to develop a new method for foreign staff to learn Icelandic.
The lead-up to Málbrúar was a detailed analysis of the need within SFV's member associations (Association of Companies in Welfare Services), conceptual work based on that analysis and strategic planning. Heiða Björk Vignisdóttir, lawyer at SFV, led the work together with a steering group, made up of representatives of nursing homes. Following that work, Rebekka Levin (Levingroup ehf.) was hired to formulate and develop a comprehensive solution based on the analysis and strategy of the steering group, and it happened Metal bridge.
A press release from SFV says:
„The "project" is carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Children's Affairs and is based on the parties' agreement on the development and implementation of job-related Icelandic education for nursing home staff with a mother tongue other than Icelandic, from 2024.
About 35% of nursing home staff with a mother tongue other than Icelandic
About 20% of residents in Iceland have a mother tongue other than Icelandic, and the percentage increases to 35% when looking at staff in nursing homes. In workplaces where communication is crucial for safety, well-being and teamwork, language is the key.
We work in a multilingual environment and that is strength. Málbrú is our answer to that fact.“
